6: REAL MADRID had a throw-in, taken by SEEDORF. The ball looped over DI FRANGESCO's head and fell sweetly for RAVANELLI. He shook off AS ROMA's STATUTO, and set off on a break up the right. He passed to GONZALES who's dummy saw DELGADO break past a sluggish defence. However, the linesman's flag was raised for offside much to DELGADO's dismay. The REAL MADRID fans started a rather unpleasant chant about the referee.
20: TAGGART of REAL MADRID received a long throw from CHILAVERT and turned to go onward only tbbe confronted by TOMASSI. He rode the full-blooded challenge (just!) and made for AS ROMA's goal. He rode his luck as he made it to the edge of the AS ROMA penalty box. He looked to be tripped by ALDAIR but had luckily sent the ball wide to EDGAR who's first time cross found the welcome foot of GONZALES on the volley. ANTONIOLI stood dumb-struck as the ball zipped into the far corner for a totally terrific GOOOOOOAAAAALLL!
28: PAREIRA finished a crashing run down the wing with a beautifully flighted cross into the packed penalty area.It was a sloppy ball and it found REAL MADRID's REHMER who easily intercepted and cleared it to safety.
37: REAL MADRID's SEEDORF handled the ball, giving away a free kick. GULUNOGLU (of AS ROMA) quickly took it and sent STATUTO away down the left toward goal. TAGGART crashed into him but he kept his feet and passed to PAREIRA. He took the ball wide, shrugged off a challenge from HIERRO and crossed into the box. REAL MADRID's goalie punched the ball away under pressure but it fell invitingly for TOMASSI and he volleyed the ball goalward. CHILAVERT was off his line, eagerly back-tracking and only just managed to tip the ball over the bar for a corner.
38: TOMASSI took the corner and delivered a vicious in-swinger.. VAGNER knocked the ball on. The ball came straight to the feet of TAGGART who cleared the ball with venom, making sure it would clear the danger area.
HALF-TIME: 0-1
56: AS ROMA's DI FRANCESCO made a short pass to STATUTO who took it round SAVIO and then passed the ball on to TOMASSI. He took it in his stride as he made a run toward goal. He took itpast SEEDORF and delivered a fine cross into the box. TAGGART headed it clear but only as far as AS ROMA's GULUNOGLU who's boot connected with the ball. The goalie covered a lot of ground but was well beaten and was relieved to see it skim dangerously past the far post.
65: AS ROMA had a throw in, taken by PAREIRA. His short throw found TOMASSI who returned the ball under pressure from HIERRO. PAREIRA took the ball inside and played a searching ball forward. GULUNOGLU shrugged off his marker and with a near-perfect scissor action his boot met the ball on the volley. The goalie managed to tip the ball with his fingers but the power of the shot carried it onto the bottom of the crossbar and it bounced down over the line for a GOAL!
76: SAVIO collected a long ball from defence, expertly rounded VAGNER with the help of DELGADO and took the ball toward AS ROMA's goal. Pure skill took him past an ungainly GURENKO, right to the edge of the area where he flicked it square to GONZALES who'd pulled off his marker to give himself space for a stunning mid-air volley. ANTONIOLI got his fingers to it but it wasn't enough and as the AS ROMA fans watched in silence, the ball slipped into the back of the net for a tremendous GOAL!
80: REAL MADRID made a substitution: DELGADO off, HELGUERA on.
85: REAL MADRID made a substitution: HERNANDEZ came on for RAVANELLI.
85: AS ROMA's DI FRANCESGO suddenly burst from midfield and made for goal, releasing the ball to VAGNER who in turn picked out ALDAIR perfectly to continue the run on goal. He rode several poor challenges before releasing the ball to GROSSI who'd made a great run through the tattered REAL MADRID defence. HIERRO was quick to close him down but GROSSI had enough time to whip a telling ball across the face of the goal which PAREIRA met squarely with his outstretched boot. It hit the crossbar and bounced down and in, leaving CHILAVERT shaking his head in disbelief and the AS ROMA fans roaring with delight. GOAL!
