5: A long pass by ALMEYDA (of LAZIO) from midfield was quickly
brought under control by
SIMEONE who then made a dash for goal. BOKSIC was still in the REAL
MADRID half after picking himself up after the crunching tackle by VITOR.
Further upfield SIMEONE played a clever through ball to SALAS, beating
the offside trap. Even though the straying LAZIO player was not interfering
with play, he was stood still with his arms raised, the referee blew for
offside.
The LAZIO players and fans were incensed by the decision and the LAZIO
captain went over to
the referee to remind him of the offside rules.
15: JARNI took the ball past LUZARDI, did a neat one-two with RAVANELLI to get past NEGRO along the right wing and finished a great run with a cross into the area. It was a long ball and SEEDORF drew away from his marker to head the ball goalward. It was a difficult shot which caused the goalie to parry the ball rather than catch it. Luckily for LAZIO it fell for NESTA who took the ball safely out of danger.
22: REAL MADRID’s RAVANELLI unfairly brought down one of the LAZIO players, giving away a free kick. ALMEYDA stepped up to take it and passed square to VERON. He took it easily round SEEDORF and played a short ball to BOKSIC. Under pressure from SEEDORF he managed to deliver a great ball into REAL MADRID’s 6-yard box. FETTIS rose to catch it but a lack of communication in defence meant that HIERRO’s head met the ball first and it bounced invitingly out to SIMEONE on the edge of the penalty area. He took aim and then struck a shot at goal. As it hit the post the crowd breathed a sigh of relief but the rebound came off FETTIS as he grappled to gain control and the ball still ended up in the back of the net. GOAL!
32: SEEDORF collected a long ball from defence, expertly rounded VERON with the help of JARNI and took the ball toward LAZIO’s goal. He dribbled at speed past BOKSIC and delivered a beautiful ball across the field to BALIC, who’s first touch stunned the ball and second touch sent the ball screeching toward the LAZIO goal. A cruel bounce wrong-footed MARCHEGIANI and he was powerless to prevent the ball from finding the back of the net (to the delight of the REAL MADRID fans). GOAL!
41: LUZARDI poorly cleared from defence, needlessly giving the ball away to set REAL MADRID on the attack. BALIC took up the pace and slotted an early ball into the box. Despite nearly having the shirt torn off his back by NESTA, GONZALES got his head to the ball first, refusing to look for the penalty, to send in a goalward header. As the LAZIO defence watched with their hearts in their mouths MARCHEGIANI managed to get his fingers to it, but it wasn’t enough and he couldn’t prevent a stunning GOAL!
HALF-TIME: 1-2
54: VERON (of LAZIO) received a square pass from DJAIR and then made a quick break up the centre. Once he’d avoided a lunging challenge from JARNI he knocked the ball back into DJAIR’s path who then cut inside to carry on toward the REAL MADRID goal. He was through on goal when CARLOS made a careless challenge to bring him down just inside the box. The Referee was well placed and pointed straight to the penalty spot.
55: The noise from the fans was deafening as SALAS stepped up to take the penalty. The crowd were stunned as he slammed the ball into the roof of the net, easily beating a bewildered FETTIS. GOAL!
74: GONZALES won a midfield challenge with a header forward to JARNI which put REAL MADRID on the attack. With LAZIO’s defenders backtracking JARNI looked up and crossed the ball into LAZIO’s box. DJAIR almost intercepted it but EDGAR got in front of him and took the shot on the volley. It looped high over MARCHEGIANI who was off his line and ended up at the back of the net for a spectacular GOAL!
75: REAL MADRID made a substitution: KAREMBEU came on for BALIC.

78: A midfield situation turned into an attack as LAZIO’s ALMEYDA made a. fast sprint toward goal. On his heels were SALAS and VERON leaving REAL MADRID’s QUIQUE a problem on who to chase. Pure skill took him past an ungainly SALGADO, right to the edge of the area where he flicked it square to SIMEONE who’d pulled off his marker to give himself space for a stunning mid-air volley. With superb reactions FETTIS parried the ball safely over the bar.
79: LAZIO’s corner was taken quickly by SIMEONE. It swept low toward
the near post for VERON to flick on into the area. It was a stunning ball
which was met by the head of ALMEYDA. His header looped high over the goalie
who was off his line but it was headed away by KAREMBEU who was covering
and HIERRO played the ball away for REAL MADRID preventing what would’ve
been a goal.
