MATCH REPORT
MARSEILLE vs AALBORG
Continental Cup

13: AALBORG'S THORST suddenly burst from midfield and made for goal, releasing the ball to DEMETRADZE who in turn picked out KRISTENSEN perfectly to continue the run on goal. He turned inside to pass to FREDERIKSEN but MARSEILLE's BAKAYOKO was quick to close him down and unfairly knocked him off the ball. AALBORG were awarded a direct free kick. The shot was struck hard and low but it hit a defending player and was cleared to safety by MARSEILLE without any real danger

17: A long pass by THORST (of AALBORG) from midfield was quickly brought under control by BEASLEY who then made a dash for goal. He held the ball up, waiting for support, and before BLONDEAU could close him down he played a square ball into the path of FREDERIKSEN. The crowd could sense something was about to happen and the noise rose to deafening levels. FREDERIKSEN dummied the ball cockily past ALEX and crossed a fine ball in toward the MARSEILLE box. PETKOVIC showed a great turn of speed to get to the ball first and slotted a tentative ball at goal. The goalie had closed the angle down and managed to tip the ball over the crossbar. 18: The crowd began to get excited as FREDERIKSEN stepped up to take the corner. He sent the ball toward the MARSEILLE six-yard box. The ball was knocked behind by BLONDEAU. PETKOVIC took the corner. He swung it in to the near post with venom. The keeper just managed to react with a outstretched fist and DEHU cleared the ball.

35: A long crossfield ball by FREDERIKSEN found PETKOVIC on the wing. PETKOVIC turned to attack and with an exquisite dummy sends DEHU sprawling. He cuts inside BLONDEAU and launches a high ball towards the corner of the box. It wasn't a very good cross but still it found DEMETRADZE who'd beaten BLANC with a fine leap to head it at goal. The ball beat the goalie but skipped uselessly across the face of the goal past the far post.

43: AALBORG's DEMETRADZE switched the ball to FREDERIKSEN on the left. He took the ball skilfully past BLANC and wildly swung the ball into the area. It was a great pass which found BEASLEY in a great position. He rifled off an early shot. With a magnificent leap LOPETEGUI just managed to get a hand to it and punch it out for BLONDEAU to carry away upfield.

HALF-TIME: 0-0

51: GARCIA won a midfield challenge with a header forward to BAKAYOKO which put MARSEILLE on the attack. With AALBORG's defenders backtracking BAKAYOKO looked up and crossed the ball into AALBORG's box. Both FREDERIKSEN and PALERMO went for the ball. Elbows went flailing and FREDERIKSEN cleared the ball as PALERMO went down clutching his face. the MARSEILLE fans were incensed by the challenge. The referee took one look at the downed player and waved play on. This prompted the AALBORG fans into a chant of "Are you David Ellery, are you Ellery, are you Ellery in disguise?

62: ALEX tried to hold the ball up on the halfway line but was caught in possession by a crunching tackle from STRANDLI sending him tumbling to the ground. The crowd roared but the Referee waved play-on as FREDERIKSEN took control and sent BEASLEY on a dangerous run. Pure skill took him past an ungainly PALERMO, right to the edge of the area where he flicked it square to PETKOVIC who'd pulled off his marker to give himself space for a stunning mid-air volley. It sailed straight in for an excellent GOAL!

76: MARSEILLE's goalie booted the ball up the field which REDONDO brought under control and turned to attack. He took it past DEMETRADZE and delivered a fine cross into the box. KRISTENSEN headed it clear but only as far as MARSEILLE's GARCIA who's boot connected with the ball. JORGENSEN scrambled across the face of the goal and just managed to get a touch, to deflect it past the post for a corner.

77: MARSEILLE's corner was taken quickly by BAKAYOKO. It swept low toward the near post for GARCIA to flick on into the area. It was a sloppy ball and it found AALBORG's KRISTENSEN who easily intercepted and cleared it to safety.

84: AALBORG's DEMETRADZE won a 50/50 tackle in midfield with ALEX and advanced menacingly toward the MARSEILLE goal. He played an intelligent ball to THORST on the far side who was soon closed down by DEHU. A smooth flick into the path of FREDERIKSEN who'd made a great run into space created the chance AALBORG were looking for and he unleashed a shot. LOPETEGUI had to jump but the catch, in the end, was reasonably comfortable.
